Hulbert is a small town located in Oklahoma and consists of about 1,000 residents. It’s about a 1 hour and 10 minute drive from the Tulsa international airport. 


In the Spring you get to experience amazing wildflowers and the sites and sounds of baby animals! In the Summer the area is known for its beautiful lake and water sports, and in the Fall and Winter people come here to get outdoors, view the spectacular Fall colors and enjoy some peace and serenity.

Go Hiking at Sequoyah State Park

Sequoyah State Park is one of the best places to visit in Oklahoma for the outdoor enthusiast. Just across the lake from our property sits this beautiful park. The park contains over 7,000 acres of pristine wilderness and it features mountains and valleys filled with beautiful scenery. Several hiking trails within the park are well-marked and easy to follow. For those who want a more challenging hike, there are also miles of unmarked trails for you to explore.

Sequoya Riding Stables is a good place to take the family for a day of fun. Just a short 20 minute drive from The Roadrunner Retreat, Sequoyah State Park has some beautiful horses. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the horses. There are several different trails to choose from, including one for beginners. The trails are well maintained and easy to navigate. The staff offers guided tours as well as horseback riding lessons if you want to learn how to ride a horse. The park offers horseback riding along a 6-mile trail that begins at the stables. Horse rental is available through the park or bring your own horse. The trail winds through tall prairie grass, crossing several small creeks and ending at the lake.

The lake offers several marinas where you can rent boats or jet skis. There’s also an area where you can launch your own boat from the shore if you have one with you. Here at the Roadrunner Retreat we have a boat slip for you to tie up to while you bask in the afternoon sun! You can enjoy swimming or fishing off the shoreline at Fort Gibson Lake or jump off the end of our dock!There is a fishing pier and facilities for cleaning your catch of the day. Besides fishing and swimming, there is plenty of wildlife in the area such as whitetail deer, ducks, geese, rabbits, and squirrels. In the spring, if you’re a bird enthusiast, you might catch sight of a Louisiana Waterthrush or Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Hulbert and Muskogee have many great festivals throughout the year. The most popular festival is the annual Ice Cream Social held at the Hulbert Community Center on 4th of July weekend. Other festivals include a Spring Flower Festival in Muskogee, Harvest Festival in October, Christmas Open House in December, and a Holiday Craft Show in December.

Zoo Safari USA is a permanent home for rescued animals. They house birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods. The Zoo is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. The Zoo animals also “travel” a couple of times per year to attend local community events to educate people on preserving our animal friends. Maybe you would rather do a little antique shopping in Tahlequah at The Speckled Hen Antique & Flea Market.
